Abstract
Periodontal disease is one of the earliest human diseases recognized to be associated with mixed-species
biofilms. One of the microorganism involved in this biofilm include Candida species which have been
invariably found in large quantities in subgingival area of patients having periodontal disease. This paper
reviews the prevalence of Candida species in periodontal disease as well as their virulence factors and
identification methods.
